Obituary

Thomas "Pop" Leonard Zaleski, P.E., 88, of Utica, passed away Thursday, June 29, 2017 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. Tom was born at home, June 8, 1929, in Mt. Carmel, Pennsylvania to the late Alexander and Bertha Zaleski.

He was of the Catholic Faith and a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

Tom believed that success required hard work. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from Newark College of Engineering before taking a position with the State of New Jersey. He continued his mechanical engineering work at General Motors in Saginaw, Michigan where he invented the collapsible steering column. He then moved to Princeton and later Utica, Kentucky. He retired as a Professional Engineer for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. During his seventeen years of service he became a key part of the Division of Finance and Administration. Tom was registered with the state boards of architecture and engineering in Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri and Michigan and was recognized as an Honorable Kentucky Colonel.

He enjoyed Sudoku and gardening. Tom was also a sports fan, especially of Rob Gronkowski and U.K Basketball.

He was preceded in death by seven siblings.

Tom is survived by his wife of more than sixty years, Helen Cathy Zaleski; a daughter, Lori C. Schneider and her husband Derek of Owensboro; sons, Gary J. Zaleski of Corona, CA and Dr. Mike S. Zaleski of Hattiesburg, MS; grandchildren, Charles and Catherine Schneider, Erin Martinez and her husband Brett and Paige Zaleski; great-grandchildren, Jackson and Sawyer Martinez; a sister, Mary Lou Keller and her husband Tom of Conshohocken, PA; a brother, Ronald Zaleski of Mt. Carmel, PA; brother-in-law, Edward Gilligan, his wife Helen and their seven children of Somerset, NJ; and many nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service will be held at St. Anthony (Brown's Valley) Catholic Church Cemetery.
