Mary Georgetta Coomes Murphy, daughter of Theodore and Josephine Coomes, a native of Daviess Co, Kentucky, passed away on Friday, March 17, 2017, at the age of 87. Georgetta attended St. Frances Academy in Owensboro, Kentucky. For 66 years, Georgetta was the devoted wife of Billy D. Murphy. As a young woman, Georgetta worked at the G. E. plant in Owensboro, but primarily, she dedicated her life to her family. She and Bill were active members of St. Stephen Cathedral. While rearing her children, she volunteered at St. Stephen Cathedral School and Owensboro catholic High School. After relocating with Bill to DeLand, Florida in 1977, she worked at the DeLand High School cafeteria for 20 years. She joined Bill in community outreach through the Owensboro Lions Club and the Daviess County Fair Committee for many years. Georgetta and Bill were members of St. Peter Catholic Church for over 40 years and the Lake Beresford Yacht Club, where she served on the Entertainment Committee, hosting an annual Kentucky Derby party for many years.
Georgetta is survived by three children: Richard Murphy and wife Donna of Owensboro, Kathy Hardesty and husband Chris of DeLand, and Thomas Murphy of Tampa, Florida; six grandchildren: Stephen (Faith) Murphy, Brandon Hardesty, Kathleen Murphy, Sarah Murphy, Ryan Murphy, and Cari Murphy; and four great grandchildren: Justus Murphy, Ryken Murphy, Breandan Murphy, and Zipporah Murphy. Georgetta was preceded in death by her loving husband Bill, and sisters Kathleen Uptodel, Emma Rose Dunbar, and Earnestine Roberts.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home in DeLand. The celebration of Georgetta Murphy's life will be held Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Peter Catholic Church in DeLand. On Friday, March 24, 2017 at 2:30 P.M., a prayer service will be held in the chapel at Resurrection Cemetery in Owensboro with burial following. Family and friends may gather at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory at 2:00 P.M. for the procession out to Resurrection Cemetery.
