Obituary

Hugh David Edds, 77, of Owensboro, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and sibling, passed away Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at Deaconess Hospital. He was born on April 24, 1940 in Beech Grove, KY to Bertie Ellis and Kittie Mavis Edds. He was a 1958 graduate of Owensboro High School and attended Brescia College. He served his country as a member of the United States Army 2nd Armored Division and in the National Guard. In September of 1961, he married his high school sweetheart Ondra Lee Embry. David worked at Texas Gas, Eck Miller Moving and Storage, and later helped to grow Eck Miller Heavy Hauling to over 200+ owner-operators. He established and operated Edds Hardware and Appliance for 9 years. He helped create and manufacture commercial mowers at Titan Turf Equipment. He retired several times but always went back to work in several months. He enjoyed helping people while working at Prudential and later with C. Phillip Clark and Associates. He remained active until his passing in their buying, selling, and managing their rental properties.

He loved his family, friends, and his community and was the type who truly never met a stranger. He worked to better his community through many local organizations. As a long time board member and later president of Cliff Hagan Boy's Club in the 1970's, he helped give kids a place to go by creating their first basketball league. As a board member and eventually president of the H.L. Neblett Center, Elizabeth Munday Senior Center Board Member and KWC All-American Club member. He was the recipient of the JayCee of the year award, Martha Laswell Award, the Man and Boy Award for Outstanding Leadership, and was a Rotary Club Paul Harris Fellow. As a member of the First Baptist Church for 66 years, he was active in many aspects spreading the gospel of the church, including driving the church bus and being director of his Sunday School department for many years. He enjoyed every Friday morning having breakfast as a founding member of the Birddog Club for the past 50 years. He was an enthusiastic fan of UK and KWC basketball, loved listening to Matt Jones on KSR. In the last several years, he found a new passion and friends in the Owensboro Duplicate Bridge Club.

David was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Ellistine Munday, Chrystal Edds, Ina Huston, and Fay Williams; brother, Gene Ray Edds. He is survived by his wife, Ondra Edds; 2 sons, David Edds, Jr. (Sandy) of Owensboro and Stephen Edds (Erin) of Indianapolis, IN; 3 grandsons, David Edds III and Benji Edds of Owensboro and Levi Edds of Indianapolis; brother, Richard Edds (Linda) of Livermore, KY; sister-in-law, Gay Nell Edds; brother-in-law, Dusty Embry (Donna) of Owensboro; several nieces and nephews

A celebration of life will be 11:00AM Monday, September 25 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Paul Strahan officiating. Private burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery. Friends may visit with his family Sunday, September 24 from 2:00 until 6:00 PM at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory and from 10:00AM until 11:00AM Monday at the church. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Cliff Hagan Boys and Girls Club.
