Obituary

Aubrey L. Pendley, 93, of Owensboro passed away Friday, March 16, 2018, surrounded by family. He was born in Butler County to the late Brice and Ethel Pendley.

He attended Butler County High School before joining the U.S. Army during World War II. He served as a medic in the 7th Infantry Division and was part of battles that included Makin, Okinawa, Kwajalein and other Marshall Islands. Following his military service, Mr. Pendley earned his Bachelor's Degree from Western Kentucky University before attending Indiana University where he earned a Master's Degree and administration certification. He was also a Rank One teacher. He taught and coached basketball in Whitesville, was principal in Stanley and eventually became principal at Thruston Elementary where he served for nearly thirty years. During his tenure there, he offered a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance every day, and occasionally shared one his favorite songs, "You Light Up My Life" over the school intercom system. Mr. Pendley had the courage to stand for what was right when it was needed and the kindness to make people feel at ease when that was needed. He was admired and respected for being a great listener, having a positive influence on his students and investing in relationships with them that are treasured to this day.

Mr. Pendley was a longtime member of Third Baptist Church where he served as youth department administrator and in numerous other capacities. He was instrumental in developing Yellow Creek Park and the Southeast Water District, along with Senator Wendell Ford and John Reid. Mr. Pendley was also named an Honorable Kentucky Colonel. He remained active in the community where he frequented the Apple Festival, the Riverpark Center and other civic events. He was part of a special generation that continues to inspire many.

Mr. Pendley was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Arnold Pendley in 2015; brothers, Carl and Robert Pendley; sisters, Helen Moore and Era Nell Pendley.

He is survived by two sons, Brice Pendley (Darlene) and David Pendley, both of Owensboro; two grandchildren, Miranda Pendley and Larkin Carman of Owensboro; a great-granddaughter, Henley Carman; several nieces and nephews.
