Alan graduated from Daviess County High School in 1964 where he excelled in basketball, football, and baseball. In the summer of his senior high school year, he played baseball for the Owensboro Velvet Bomber American Legion Team. He subsequently signed with Vanderbilt University as a four-year football scholarship recipient.

In 1968, Alan graduated from Western Kentucky University with a degree in business. After graduation, he worked at Woolco Department store until his wife graduated from Western. Moving to Utica in 1969, he worked at General Electric for one year. Then he returned to school to obtain his teaching certification while working at Mackey's General Store. For five years he taught at Apollo High School and coached varsity football.
In 1976, Alan began a long and successful career as a State Farm Agent. He served his many clients faithfully for 42 years. One of his greatest joys was mentoring his daughter, Hadley Embry, who worked along- side him at his agency for the last 18 years.
Alan loved and encouraged active participation in sports. He faithfully attended his grandchildren's sporting events. He spent many enjoyable hours playing golf, attending football games, spending time at the lake and pool with his beloved family and friends and playing with his faithful pet dog, Riley. He remained an avid fan and supporter of WKU football throughout his life.

Alan was a member of Owensboro Christian Church. He formerly attended Utica Baptist Church where he served as church treasurer and deacon for a number of years. He married his high school sweetheart at Utica Baptist Church.

He is survived by the love of his life, Ann Mackey Powers. They would have celebrated 49 years of marriage this August 25th.
